After completing the Mnistry of Sound brief, I have continued working with type as image.

Block font layed out in a grid. Based on geometric shapes and line.

Typeface edited, continuing with the idea of geometrics, and using lines to define part of the letter shape.

Screen prints of the final design to be completed by Monday

I am interested in the use of gemoetric shapes and block-style fonts.

Ministry of Sound Posters

Ministry of Sound, inspired by New York's cavernous House venues. Raised from what was once a bustling bus garage now derelict in the heart of 'saff' London, an area more infamous than famous. No alcohol, 3 flashing lights, moody security and, as a statement against its glitzy '80s predecessors, shiny trousers and disco shoes frowned upon. Unless you knew the names of at least half-a-dozen Chicago DJ's you were never going to get past the legendary 'pickers' residing the right side of the menacing prison-like gates.

First idea/image

"Pleased to meet you, hope you guessed my name..."

This is a collage of drawing and photographic images based on brian jones formerly of the Rolling Stones. I have used cut and paste style for this to try and get a trippy feel. I intend to turn these collages into screen prints when they are complete.

"Forever 27"

I have been looking at the deaths of famous musicians at the age of 27, or the infamous "27 Club".

I am going to be producing a series of images on this topic.

Typeface design

I created this typeface made out of Mirrors and stems used as fashionable accessories on vintage scooters

After creating these last few images, i think that they need to be sharper and maybe in block colour. i have experimented with the previous image to make it crisper.

after masking up the areas that i don't want to be painted, i used different types of green and kahki color paint to create texture and tone.

Then i peeled away all the masking tape to reveal the white area's. I used black ink to add in more detail.

I think that using a continuous section of green paint, as a pose to painting each part seperate, supports the idea that Mods we're identified as a group of like minded people.

Finally i added a colour filter to edit the white background. it also gives it a nice haze, similar to an over exposed, old picture.

This is the first step of making these images.

I take the pencil drawing and mask of anything that doesn't have to be khaki green and then cut it out to reveal the whole parka.

This gives my a fixed stencil that i can remove after the khaki green ink and paint has dried.

Heavy pencil on dirty white paper. 

This is the start of a second piece. The people look really young in the photograph and i want to capture this youth. again i am going to use simple colour, based around the khaki green of the parka's to efine the people as Mods.

to kick start my project, i have been looking at photographs from the "Mod revival" era of the late 70's - early 80's

I want to draw these in a style that represents the era or that keeps them in a time period. To create this effect i am using the clothing that the people in the photos are wearing. The people all seem to be wearing parkas. I have started to use this as the main part of the picture and work some detail into the coats.  This idea comes from realizing that by using old photography facial features are not very clear. The parka is used in the drawings to recognise that the people are Mods.
